Quiz #3: Are You Going To The Super Bowl?
Imagine that a young guy from Kuwait travels to America and tries out for the National Football League and is selected to play for the Philadelphia Eagles! Hooray!
And now imagine that the Philadelphia Eagles play an undefeated season and they go to the Super Bowl.
All of Kuwait is extremely proud of their native son, and the country wants to show its support by organising a large delegation (a group from Kuwait) to travel to the USA and attend the Super Bowl, which will be played in January in Miami, Fl.
Kuwait Travel Agency has contacted you because they heard that you are a marketing expert. They want you to develop a marketing campaign to organise the delegation from Kuwait. The travel agency has already set the trip itinerary, which includes flying from Kuwait to Miami. Delegates will stay at a luxurious Miami Beach hotel for 5 nights and each delegate will receive a VIP ticket for the Super Bowl. The price per person for this journey is KD 5,000. Kuwait Travel Agency wants the marketing campaign to attract at least 150-200 delegates.
Here’s your assignment (which counts as Quiz #3).
1. Post your marketing plan as a Comment to this blog article. Deadline for posting your Comment is Monday 23 June at 12:00 noon in Kuwait.
2. Read all of the Comments posted by your colleagues; select just one Comment to critique. Your Critique Comment must be posted no later than Monday 23 June at 12:00 midnight.
Second, explain how/where you will advertise. What marketing activities will you include to reach and attract the Target Market? You must be specific. The more details you provide the better. For example, if you say you will advertise on “television” that’s not enough. How will you advertise on television — for example, during which times of day? If you say “billboards” — great, but that’s not sufficient. Which billboards? And what will your message say?
Third, you must justify your answers. Explain WHY you decided to advertise in your media of choice (i.e. newspapers, television, billboards, social media, etc.). Keep in mind that you can select more than one medium for your advertising placements.
Fourth, how much will your marketing plan cost to implement? How much money are you going to spend on advertising? You will need to do some homework to find out the cost of advertising on television, or newspapers, or radio, etc. If you plan to use 30 billboards for 30 days in Kuwait, what will that cost? If you plan to advertise on television 5 times a day for 30 days, what will that cost? If you plan to do a combination of advertising in print and social media, plus billboards, what will it cost?
Fifth, what’s your advertising message? Explain the message that your marketing campaign will deliver to the Target Market. You can include the headline of your ads, or describe the content of your advertisements. What will you ads or commercials say? If you're posting on social media, what will you post?
First, explain why it’s a good marketing plan, or why it’s not a good marketing plan. Be specific.
Second, explain how your colleague could have improved the marketing plan. What could have been done differently to improve the plan?
Have fun with the exercise! And be imaginative.
And now imagine that the Philadelphia Eagles play an undefeated season and they go to the Super Bowl.
Going to the Super Bowl
All of Kuwait is extremely proud of their native son, and the country wants to show its support by organising a large delegation (a group from Kuwait) to travel to the USA and attend the Super Bowl, which will be played in January in Miami, Fl.

Kuwait Travel Agency wants the marketing campaign to attract at least 150-200 delegates.
What will you do?
You are now in charge of developing the marketing plan. Kuwait Travel Agency wants you to select the Target Market and then decide where, when and how to advertise this offer. What will you do? Who should make up the Target Market? Men, women, children? How will you effectively reach the target market to sell the required number of tickets? Here’s your assignment (which counts as Quiz #3).
1. Post your marketing plan as a Comment to this blog article. Deadline for posting your Comment is Monday 23 June at 12:00 noon in Kuwait.
2. Read all of the Comments posted by your colleagues; select just one Comment to critique. Your Critique Comment must be posted no later than Monday 23 June at 12:00 midnight.
Please note: You are responsible for posting TWO comments.
First, tell us about the Target Market for your marketing plan. Who will your marketing plan target? Who is likely to agree to pay KD 5,000 per ticket for a Super Bowl journey? Describe the Target Market by gender, age, and social status.Second, explain how/where you will advertise. What marketing activities will you include to reach and attract the Target Market? After you have posted your Comment #1, then read all of the Comments posted by your colleagues. Select just one Comment of your choice and critique it. Post your Critique Comment under your colleague's Comment.First, explain why it’s a good marketing plan, or why it’s not a good marketing plan. Be specific.

Quiz #2: Why Is Basic Marketing Helpful?
Question: Why is Basic Marketing helpful to a student? (Situation 1) Assume that the student will pursue a career in marketing -- how will this student benefit from a course called Basic Marketing? Then (Situation 2) assume that the student will not pursue a career in marketing, but in another field, i.e. computer science, accounting, finance, etc. How will Basic Marketing help this student? Develop three reasons for each situation.
- Create a Word document. Name the document using this format: Why_YourFirstName.doc. At the top of the document, page 1, type your name and GUST ID. Note: Substitute your real first name for YourFirstName when you name your Word doc.
- Center the project title at the top of the first document page: Why Basic Marketing Is Helpful
- Now refer to the first question at the top of this article and write three reasons for each of the two situations . . . in other words, write three reasons why Basic Marketing is helpful for the student who pursues a marketing career, and three reasons why Basic Marketing is helpful for the student who does not pursue a marketing career. Use these two subheads: For A Student Who Pursues A Marketing Career, and For A Student Who Does Not Pursue A Marketing Career so that I'll know which situation you are describing.
- For each of your reasons write a paragraph to explain the reason. That means you will write at least three paragraphs under each of the two subheads. You also need to use examples to demonstrate your points. For example, if you state that "Basic Marketing helps a student become a better communicator," you then need to include examples to show me how Basic Marketing helps a student become a better communicator.
- You must write in complete sentences. You must check your Basic English -- errors will reduce your grade. You can ask the Student Success Center or The Writing Lab (1st floor of the Library) to help you.
- Submit your Word document via email (click for my email). The Subject of your email: Quiz #2. Deadline: 12 p.m. noon (Kuwait time) Saturday 28 June 2014. Meet the deadline!
- Do not collaborate with others on this project; do your own work.
By the way, you will find information about this topic in your textbook. You should read that information and use it in your report. However, you will earn more points if some of your reasons do not come from the textbook. In other words, think of some reasons that are not included in the textbook.

Important Dates for Basic Marketing
Plan to present your SWOT Analysis to the class on Thursday 26 June.
Test #3 will cover Chapters 11-12 and 15-16. The test will be given Sunday 29 June.
Test #3 will cover Chapters 11-12 and 15-16. The test will be given Sunday 29 June.
Bonus Points: What's Your Social Class?
Consult the "social class" section of the textbook (you'll remember we discussed social class during a recent class session). Find the page that discusses lower, middle and upper classes. Re-read the information to make sure you are familiar with it. Then write a paragraph and explain which social class you are in and why. Be sure to provide an explanation for your answer -- don't just say (for example): "I'm in the middle class." Your explanation must include three reasons that support your answer.
This is a "bonus opportunity" and is not a required assignment. Only those students who complete the assignment on time and to my satisfaction will receive the bonus points. Here's what to do:
1. Read the first paragraph above so you know what to do.
2. Create a Word document and name the file Bonus_Mrkt201.doc.
3. Include your name and GUST ID # at the top of the first page of the document.
4. Type your answer as required in the first paragraph.
5. Submit the completed document to me at this email address no later than Tuesday 17 June at 12:00 noon in Kuwait. The Subject line of your email must read: Marketing 201 Bonus Points.
6. You will be graded for English usage so double check the content before you submit the assignment.

See How Your Colleague Earned An "A"
Quizzes are "easy" opportunities to earn "A" marks in Basic Marketing. If you did not earn an "A" on Quiz 1, there are specific reasons why, all of which I explained in my comments when I returned the quiz to you. To earn an "A" you need to (1) answer the questions asked by the quiz (many of you did not do that); (2) deliver the assignment on time (some of you did not do that); and (3) use better than average English (many of you did not do that). This link will lead you to an "A" quiz . . . I suggest you review the paper and use it as an example to improve your future quiz grades.
Bonus Points: Most of you need to work with the Student Success Center and/or The Writing Lab. If you do so weekly (at least 7 times during the Summer I semester) and SSC or The Writing Lab informs me of your participation, you will earn points that may improve your final grade.

Add Your Comment Now
Next week you will be required to type and leave Comments on this blog. Make certain that you know how to do that now. Scroll down to the bottom of this article and look for the link for Comments (it may say No Comments). Click on the link and the Comments form will pop up. All you need to do is type your name and Publish it as a Comment . . . then check back to make sure your name appears in the Comments . . . you may need to wait 24 hours for your Comment to appear. . . . If you cannot follow these directions, or you cannot post a Comment, visit GUST IT and ask them to help you. Or visit the SSC on the 1st floor at GUST.
Your Basic Marketing Quiz
GUST wants to attract more students. How can GUST do that using different orientations?
1. How can GUST develop and implement (use) a sales orientation?
2. How can GUST develop and implement (use) a market orientation?
3. How can GUST develop and implement (use) a social orientation?
Answer all 3 questions. And make sure you provide specific information. Do NOT say, for example, that “GUST can use a sales orientation by following the sales orientation principles.” That’s not enough information. You must explain (1) HOW GUST would develop a sales orientation, and (2) HOW GUST would implement a sales orientation. Same thing for market and social orientations. Be specific!
Here’s what you need to do now:
A. Create a Word document. You can only use Word.
B. Name the document Quiz 1 Basic Marketing.
C. Type your name and your GUST ID at the top of the document.
D. Now answer the questions 1, 2 and 3.
E. Submit the finished Word doc to me at hayes.j@gust.edu.kw. On the Subject line of the email type: Quiz 1. I MUST receive your email NO LATER THAN 1:45 p.m. (in Kuwait) Monday 9 June 2014. I deduct points if you are late; I deduct points if you have more than 10 spelling/grammar errors.
You can use bullet points, but you MUST write in complete sentences. Please check your spelling — use Tools/Spelling Grammar.
Best wishes!
